Dr. John McDougall, a pioneer and visionary physician who championed a Whole Food Plant Based (WFPB) diet to restore health and lose weight naturally, died peacefully in his sleep at his home on Saturday, June 22nd, at the age of 77.
He was one of the most influential doctors and advocates for a WFPB lifestyle in our lives. We will miss his frequent, straight-talking videos on the science and effectiveness of this lifestyle and wish his family all the best.

Dr. McDougall leaves behind a profound legacy in the healthcare field. His journey into healthcare began with a massive stroke, surprisingly, at the age of 18. While this illness left him with a lifelong disability, it also ignited in him the passion to transform healthcare for the better, impacting thousands and thousands of lives around the world.
Dr. McDougall was one of the best known authorities on nutrition and preventive medicine. His first book, "The McDougall Plan" written in 1983, was a NY Times bestseller and remains one of the most read books on the power of a Whole Food Plant Based (WFPB) diet to both prevent and treat chronic illnesses today.
As his daughter mentioned on their website, John lived a life full of adventure, love and happiness. We are deeply grateful to him for all the knowledge he shared and lived.
The recipe this week is from John's wife, Mary McDougall. It is an Edamame Surprise. We don't use edamame often, and this is a delicious combination with rice, cabbage, tomato and corn. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

Edamame Surprise (Serves 2-3) *adapted from Mary McDougall
- ¼ cup vegetable broth
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce (optional)
- ½ teaspoon curry paste
- 2 teaspoons no salt seasoning
- 2 cups shelled edamame
- 4 cups shredded cabbage
- 2 cups frozen corn
- 3 cups cooked brown rice
- 2 fresh tomatoes, diced
Place broth, soy sauce, curry paste and no salt seasoning in a large pan and mix well.
Add edamame and cabbage and cook stirring frequently for about 4 minutes.
Add corn, tomatoes and rice and cook stirring frequently for another 5 minutes.
Serve and enjoy.
